spain-held-to-frustrating-goalless-draw-by-resolute-cape-verde

Spain were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Cape Verde in their opening World Cup Group H match, with the Europeans unable to convert their dominance into goals against a disciplined and well-organised defence.

The Spaniards dictated the tempo of the game from the first minute, controlled at least 70% possession, had all the momentum, orchestrated play, and created chances and kept their opponents side under pressure.

However, they struggled to convert their chances into goals against a disciplined, resilient and highly aware Cape Verde defense, whose defensive solidity hasn’t really matched their attacking play, with the island nation generating only few meaningful chances throughout the contest.

Both terms persisted, but were unable to find a breakthrough till stoppage time.

Spain turn their attention to Saudi Arabia before a potentially decisive clash with Uruguay, while Cape Verde next face Uruguay followed by Saudi Arabia as the group stage continues.
