SpaceX has unveiled details of its long-awaited initial public offering filing, exposing the scale of losses tied to Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence ambitions while showing plans to transform the rocket company into a dominant AI-driven technology group.
The filing, released on Wednesday, showed the company recorded a total operating loss of $1.94 billion in the first quarter despite generating $4.69 billion in revenue.
Much of the losses came from SpaceX’s artificial intelligence division, which posted $2.47 billion in losses on $818 million in revenue during the same period.
The disclosure also showed Musk’s continued grip over the company, giving shareholders limited influence over strategic decisions as SpaceX doubles down on emerging technologies and future markets.
The company’s long-term projections depend heavily on businesses and technologies that are still under development, including Mars missions and space-based AI data centres powered by solar energy.
SpaceX said those future operations could target a market worth as much as $28.5 trillion.
The filing follows SpaceX’s February acquisition of Musk’s artificial intelligence and social media company, xAI, a move that significantly increased spending and widened losses.
According to the filing, xAI-related investments accounted for 76% of the company’s $10.1 billion in capital spending during the first quarter.
Of SpaceX’s three business divisions, only Starlink, its satellite internet operation, generated a profit during the period.
Starlink posted an operating profit of $1.19 billion, but the gains were insufficient to offset losses across the broader company.
The IPO could become the first US stock market debut valued above $1 trillion, potentially making SpaceX one of the world’s most valuable publicly traded firms.
Despite concerns over mounting losses and spending, investor confidence in Musk remains strong due to his track record at Tesla and SpaceX, including achievements in reusable rocket technology and satellite internet services.
