South Africa rescued a point with a late penalty to earn a 1-1 draw against Czech Republic in their Group A clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving both sides still searching for their first win of the tournament.
The Czech Republic appeared on course for a vital victory after Michal Sadilek fired them into the lead in the sixth minute, scoring one of the earliest goals of the competition so far. The early breakthrough gave the Europeans control of the contest, but they were unable to build on their advantage despite leading for most of the match.
As the game progressed, the Czechs increasingly retreated into a defensive approach, failing to convert their possession and territorial advantage into a second goal. Their lack of sharpness in the final third proved costly as South Africa gradually grew into the contest.
The decisive moment arrived in the 83rd minute when South Africa were awarded a penalty after Pavel Sulc was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area. Midfielder Teboho Mokoena stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to level the score and spark celebrations among the South African supporters inside the stadium.
The penalty decision proved controversial, with many viewing it as a harsh call against the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, Mokoena made no mistake, ensuring South Africa remained alive in the race for qualification from Group A.
Buoyed by the equaliser, South Africa looked the more likely side to find a winner in the closing stages, pushing forward with greater urgency while the Czech Republic struggled to regain their earlier rhythm.
The result leaves both teams with work to do heading into their final group-stage fixtures. While South Africa will take confidence from their late comeback, the Czech Republic may be left wondering why they failed to press for a second goal after taking such an early lead.
Neither side displayed enough quality in attack to fully deserve victory, but South Africa’s persistence earned them a valuable point, while the Czech Republic were left frustrated after seeing a win slip away in the closing minutes.
