nigeria-arraigns-over-600-terrorism-suspects-in-fresh-abuja-mass-trial

The Federal Government has commenced a fresh mass trial involving more than 600 terrorism suspects facing a range of charges linked to insurgency and terrorist activities across the country.

The suspects, who were arrested in different parts of Nigeria, are being prosecuted before the Federal High Court in Abuja on allegations including participation in terrorist attacks, membership of proscribed groups, terrorism financing, and failure to disclose information about terrorist activities within their communities.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, is personally leading the prosecution team in the latest phase of the trials.

The mass trial follows an earlier phase conducted in April. During that exercise, more than 500 suspects were arraigned. According to government figures, 386 of the defendants were convicted, while two were acquitted and eight were discharged.

The latest proceedings form part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the prosecution of terrorism-related offences and hold individuals accused of supporting or participating in terrorist activities accountable under the law.

Further details on the ongoing trial are expected as proceedings continue at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
