Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement personally signed on Wednesday, Fubara said his decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family members, friends and political associates.

The governor described the decision as difficult but necessary, stressing that the peace, unity and stability of Rivers State must take precedence over personal political ambition.

“Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he stated.

Fubara also assured supporters that he remained committed to the APC and would support whoever eventually emerges as the party’s governorship candidate.

He thanked his supporters for their loyalty and sacrifices throughout the political process, acknowledging the disappointment many of them might feel following his withdrawal.

“I understand the disappointment, the anger, and the pain many of you may feel. Much has indeed been invested and much sacrificed along the way. But please know that your loyalty and trust were never in vain,” he said.

The governor hinted at underlying political pressures surrounding the contest, though he declined to provide details.

“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” he stated.

Fubara expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for what he described as support and encouragement during the process, while reaffirming his loyalty to the APC.

“The APC remains our collective home, and I urge all party faithful and supporters to remain steadfast and committed as we continue to build a stronger and more united future together,” he added.

The governor insisted that his decision should not be interpreted as weakness, fear or surrender, maintaining that it was a sacrifice made in the interest of peace and unity in Rivers State.

He also pledged to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the completion of his tenure.

The withdrawal comes amid heightened political realignments and internal contestations within the APC in Rivers State ahead of the party’s governorship primaries.
