Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has raised alarm over what he described as worsening insecurity and alleged political violence in parts of the state, accusing the Commissioner of Police of failing to cooperate with other security agencies.
The governor said the situation had become intolerable and insisted he had escalated the matter to top security authorities, including the military and police leadership.
“I am very, very sad. The Commissioner of Police in Osun State is not cooperating,” Adeleke said.
He added that the lack of coordination among security actors was contributing to repeated crises in the state.
“That’s why we keep having problems. Other agencies are trying, but he in particular, I don’t know what is his problem,” he said.
Reports from affected areas indicated that a violent confrontation had broken out involving suspected political actors, with claims of shooting and chaos during the incident.
“Right now, I’m told there was a shootout with the thugs,” he said.
He further alleged that armed political groups were responsible for the violence, describing the situation as unacceptable.
“They call them the Assyrians, but the thugs of the APC in Osun, they came outside and started shooting people. It is not acceptable,” he said .
Amid the unrest, an appeal was made for calm, with warnings against further escalation and retaliation.
“And I’m telling my people to calm down. We don’t want to have emergency job or any chaos and they will start killing,” another voice said.
He said efforts had been made to restore order but alleged that continued provocation was fuelling instability.
“Not that they don’t know about violence, but I’ve tried my best to make sure Osun is calm and there’s no problem. But they are pushing. They keep pushing, killing people,” the speaker said.
Governor Adeleke further disclosed that he had contacted multiple security heads in response to the crisis.
“As I’m talking to you, I’ve called the GOC, I’ve called the Chief of Army Staff, I’ve reported to the IG, I’ve done everything. When I finish right now from here, I’m going to go and have another press conference. Enough is enough,” he said.
