Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has declared that Lagos politics has come of age as it has always been in the forefront of the nation’s politics.
Receiving the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, as the state’s APC consensus candidate, the First Lady said, “Politically, Lagos State has always been at the forefront, showcasing leadership to the rest of Nigeria. You have added a first and it is so peaceful, and I think we are all getting matured politically and have come of age.”
The symbolic presentation was performed by a delegation of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) members led by its leader, Prince Tajudden Oluyole Olusi.
According to the First Lady, the GAC, which is just like the Electoral College, has done well in its choice of Hamzat.
“With all the years of our democracy, we now know that all power belongs to God and He gives it to whoever He pleases.”
To the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mrs Tinubu commended him for his leadership so far, praying for a good life thereafter.
“You have done your best, and I pray that as you begin to transition, God will keep you and be with you.”
Earlier in his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that Dr Obafemi Hamzat had engaged in diverse consultations and engagements with groups and individuals, including some who indicated interest in contesting for the governor’s seat.
“Yesterday, 25 GAC members were present at the meeting and they unanimously agreed and confirmed our willingness to support Kadri Obafemi Hamzat. We have also presented him to Mr President and he has accepted Kadri Obafemi Hamzat. But as a GAC member yourself, we have come to present him to you, get your motherly blessing and counsel as well.”
Also speaking, leader of the GAC, Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, explained that in Yoruba culture, the role of women in governance is institutionalised, laying credence to their visit to the First Lady for her blessing and counsel.
On her part, SSA to the President on Sustainable Development Goals and a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, commended the various efforts of the First Lady in the nation even as she supports the President through her various programmes and interventions.
“You are indeed a strong woman, and we are really proud of you. We pray that what our leader and mentor, Mr President, is doing for this nation will be sustained.”
Adefulire then presented Hamzat to the First Lady as APC consensus gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 polls.
