Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has confirmed he will leave the club this summer, drawing the curtain on a remarkable decade-long spell in north London.
The 33-year-old South Korea international, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, has scored 173 goals in 454 appearances and captained the team to Europa League glory in May, the club’s first trophy in 17 years.
Speaking during a press conference alongside new Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank in Seoul, where the club is currently on a pre-season tour, Son described the decision to leave as “the most difficult one I have made in my career.”
“I came to north London as a kid — a very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn’t speak English,” Son recalled emotionally. “Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment.”
Son’s contract with Tottenham runs until 2026, but reports have linked him with a move to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC, suggesting a transfer may be imminent. His farewell match could come as early as Sunday, when Spurs face Newcastle United in a friendly in Seoul — potentially giving Son a final appearance in front of his home fans.
Frank, who took over from Ange Postecoglou as head coach in June, paid tribute to Son, calling him “a true Spurs legend” and “one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League.”
“If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it, here in front of his home fans,” Frank said. “It could be a beautiful ending.”
Although Tottenham are due to face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on 13 August, Son may leave the club before that fixture, closing a chapter that has left an indelible mark on both Tottenham and the Premier League.
