US technology billionaire Joe Lonsdale has made a significant investment in Nigeria’s growing defence and technology sector, committing $11.8 million to Abuja-based drone manufacturer Terra Industries.
The startup specialises in the production of drones and autonomous security systems designed to protect critical infrastructure across Africa, with assets valued at an estimated $11 billion. Terra Industries’ solutions are increasingly deployed in surveillance, infrastructure protection, and security operations across the continent.
According to the company, the fresh funding will be used to expand its manufacturing capacity, strengthen research and development, and support cross-border security and counter-terrorism operations. The investment is expected to position Terra Industries to meet rising demand for locally produced security technology as African countries seek more self-reliant defence capabilities.
Terra Industries says it is focused on building African-led engineering solutions, prioritising homegrown innovation and talent in the defence and security space. The company believes this approach will not only improve regional security outcomes but also reduce reliance on imported technologies.
Lonsdale’s investment underscores growing international confidence in Nigeria’s technology ecosystem, particularly in sectors addressing security, infrastructure protection, and advanced manufacturing.
