uk-urges-citizens-in-israel-to-register-with-british-authorities

The British government has advised its nationals in Israel to register their presence, citing growing concerns over the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.

Speaking at the G7 summit in Canada on Monday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the move, saying it was part of efforts to “build up a picture of who is in the region” in case they require assistance.

“For British nationals in Israel, we’re giving advice today to register their presence,” Starmer told reporters.

The advisory follows heightened tensions in the region after Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on Friday, accusing Tehran of nearing the development of a nuclear weapon. In response, Iran fired missiles at major Israeli cities, raising fears of a broader regional conflict. Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

In a separate press briefing in London, Starmer’s spokesperson explained the rationale behind the registration initiative. “Our key message to British nationals in Israel is to follow the advice of local authorities on staying close to shelter,” they said.

They added that the British government was launching a “register your presence” portal to help track nationals in the area and assess who might need help. “We urge British nationals in Israel to complete this when it becomes available.”

The spokesperson also noted that the UK is expanding logistical support for citizens wishing to leave Israel by land, with arrangements in place via neighbouring Jordan and Egypt. Foreign Office officials are already stationed at the Jordanian border to assist with evacuations.

The move reflects growing international concern over the intensifying conflict, with Western leaders monitoring developments closely and preparing for possible humanitarian contingencies.
