tiger-woods-steps-away-to-seek-treatment-after-dui-arrest

Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods has announced he is stepping away from golf to focus on his health following his arrest after a car crash in Florida.

The 50-year-old golfer was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after his vehicle clipped a truck and overturned last Friday. He also faces charges of property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. Woods has since entered a written plea of not guilty through his legal team.

According to a police report, officers found two hydrocodone pills—an opioid used for severe pain—in his possession. Authorities also noted that Woods appeared “lethargic and slow,” was sweating heavily, and had “extremely dilated” pupils following the crash.

Addressing the incident publicly for the first time, Woods said he is taking time away to prioritise his wellbeing. He said, “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my wellbeing and work toward lasting recovery.”

He added, “I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”

The announcement casts doubt over his participation in upcoming events, including The Masters, where he had not ruled out competing despite limited appearances in recent years. Woods has not played in a major tournament since missing the cut at The Open Championship in July 2024. He was also expected to attend events surrounding the Masters, including the unveiling of a redesigned public golf course on Sunday and the champion’s dinner hosted by Rory McIlroy on Tuesday night.

Officials from Augusta National Golf Club expressed support for Woods, noting that although he will not attend in person, his presence will still be felt. The PGA Tour also voiced its backing, describing Woods as a legendary figure whose influence extends beyond the sport.

The latest incident adds to a series of personal and professional challenges Woods has faced over the years. In 2017, he received a year’s probation after pleading guilty to reckless driving, while a 2021 car crash left him with serious injuries requiring multiple surgeries.

Despite these setbacks, Woods had recently returned to competitive action, taking part in the TGL indoor golf league following further medical procedures, including back surgery and treatment for an Achilles tendon injury.

As he steps away once again, Woods said he is committed to taking the time needed to recover fully, while asking for privacy for himself and his family.
