super-eagles-defeat-iran-2-1

Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a commanding victory over Iran, continuing their rebuilding momentum after missing out on qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

The match marked the team’s first outing since finishing third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and they delivered a composed performance despite the absence of key players Victor Osimhen and Calvin Bassey due to injuries.

Moses Simon opened the scoring within six minutes, showcasing skill and composure as he beat his marker and fired low into the near post. Nigeria doubled their lead early in the second half when Ademola Lookman threaded a precise pass to Adams, who calmly finished beneath the goalkeeper.

Iran, whose World Cup participation remains uncertain amid geopolitical tensions and ongoing discussions with FIFA, managed to pull one goal back but failed to match Nigeria’s intensity.

Maduka Okoye returned to the starting line-up, while Igoh Ogbu stepped in for Bassey, as the Eagles maintained the cohesion that powered their recent AFCON success.

Nigeria held on to secure the win in front of a sparse crowd and will face Jordan in their final match of the tournament on Tuesday.
