Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio has been appointed as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, succeeding Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose tenure as leader of the regional bloc has come to an end.

The announcement was made at the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held on Saturday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. President Tinubu formally handed over the reins of leadership to his Sierra Leonean counterpart at the summit, which brought together regional leaders to discuss security, economic integration, and democratic governance across West Africa.

In his acceptance speech, President Bio pledged to prioritise unity, regional stability and economic development during his tenure.
“I accept this responsibility with humility and a deep sense of duty to our region. We must continue to work together to consolidate peace, foster economic growth, and deepen democratic governance,” he said.

Outgoing Chairman Tinubu expressed confidence in Bio’s ability to lead the bloc effectively.
“It has been an honour to serve as Chairman of ECOWAS. As I pass on this responsibility, I do so with full confidence in President Bio’s leadership and commitment to the ideals of our community,” Tinubu stated.
