The National Working Committee of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has suspended, with immediate effect, its National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, and two NWC members, Nze Nnadi Clarkson, National Auditor, and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, National Youth Leader, for alleged “gross financial misconduct.”
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party appointed the Deputy National Chairman, Sadiq Umar Abubakar, to immediately step in an Acting capacity.
This action by the party, the statement reads, is the fallout of a resolution by the NWC, which unearthed incriminating evidence against the suspended officials linking them to a series of unauthorized financial transactions, without necessary approvals from the NWC.
By this action the party is demonstrating to the public that it is not only a disciplined and credible alternative platform for national redemption, but also has zero tolerance for corruption. This decision will allow for a thorough investigation, the statement reads.
Meanwhile, the forum of SDP state chairmen says it stands solidly behind the party’s NWC for taking this bold and necessary step to clean the entire system.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Femi Olaniyi, the forum congratulated the acting chairman, Sadiq Abubakar.
The statement read, “The Forum of State Chairmen of the SDP would like to extend our congratulations to the acting chairman on his appointment during this crucial time in our political landscape.
“We would also like to express our appreciation to the National Working Committee for making this bold and necessary decision to protect our party from individuals who have abused the trust given to them by party stakeholders and financial members.”
The Forum says it is alarmed that despite the substantial funds at the disposal of the party, state chapters are still struggling to pay office rent. It therefore advocates thorough investigation of the matter to clean the entire system.
