Scores of people have been killed and several others injured following an attack by terrorists in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Eyewitnesses said the attack occurred at about 7:00 p.m. when the assailants, who reportedly arrived in large numbers on motorcycles, began shooting sporadically into the air and directly at a crowd gathered at a popular junction in the area.
The attackers were said to have opened fire near a popular Plateau Private School, triggering panic as residents and passersby fled for safety.
Confirming the incident, the Media Information Officer, Captain Chinonso Polycarp, said the attack took place while residents were going about their normal daily activities.
According to him, the number of casualties has not yet been officially determined, although scores were reported killed and many others sustained injuries.
He added that those injured have been taken to hospital for treatment.
Polycarp said investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the attack, while security personnel have been deployed to the area to prevent any further escalation of violence.
