peter-obi:-i-remain-a-labour-party-member,-will-contest-for-president-in-2027

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has confirmed that he will seek the presidency again in 2027.

He also debunked recent speculation that he would run as a vice-presidential candidate alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking during a Tv interview on Sunday, Obi was firm in stating his political intentions. “I’m going to contest for the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” he declared.

Obi, who served as Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014, clarified that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party, despite his involvement with the newly-formed opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He explained that his participation in the coalition was not an act of disloyalty to the LP. “This is not in play,” he said, referring to the widely circulated claims about being Atiku’s running mate. “Nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C.”

Obi further defended his decision to join the coalition of opposition leaders, which recently adopted ADC as its common political platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. He said his move was rooted in the need for collective strength and diverse experience.

“I need people who have failed and succeeded before. You don’t lead a complex country like Nigeria alone,” he added.

The coalition, announced last Wednesday, includes prominent political figures such as Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, ex-Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, and former APC National Chairman John Odigie Oyegun.
