The Super Eagles of Nigeria produced a spirited performance to earn a 1-1 draw against South Africa in a crucial CAF World Cup qualifying match at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.
South Africa opened the scoring after an unfortunate own goal by the Nigerian defence, putting the Super Eagles under early pressure. Despite the setback, the visitors regrouped and kept their composure against a vibrant Bafana Bafana side.
Nigeria’s equaliser came in the 44th minute, through Calvin Bassey, who pounced on a loose ball inside the box to fire home and restore parity. The goal sparked renewed confidence in the Nigerian camp, and both teams battled fiercely in the closing stages to find a winner.
Head Coach Eric Sekou Chelle praised his team’s resilience after the match, insisting that the draw keeps Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive. Missing star striker Victor Osimhen, who was sidelined with a foot injury, the Super Eagles adjusted their attacking approach and relied on tactical discipline to frustrate their opponents.
The result sees Nigeria remain firmly in contention in Group C as the CAF World Cup qualifying campaign heats up. With only the group winner guaranteed a spot at the 2026 World Cup in the US, Mexico, and Canada, every point gained is crucial.
Nigeria will now turn their focus to the next round of qualifiers, where victory will be essential to strengthen their position in the group standings.
