Napoli began their Serie A title defence with a commanding 2-0 victory over Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium on Saturday.

Scott McTominay, the league’s reigning MVP, opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a powerful header from Matteo Politano’s cross. Kevin De Bruyne, making his league debut for Napoli, doubled the lead in the 57th minute with a precise free-kick from a tight angle.

Sassuolo’s hopes were further dashed when Ismael Kone received a second yellow card late in the game, reducing the hosts to ten men.

Despite entering the season without injured striker Romelu Lukaku, Napoli adapted well with Lorenzo Lucca leading the line. The midfield duo of McTominay and De Bruyne controlled the game’s tempo, with McTominay’s early goal setting the tone. De Bruyne’s vision and passing added creativity, forming a promising partnership with McTominay.

Napoli manager Antonio Conte expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance but acknowledged the need for further adaptation, particularly in integrating De Bruyne into the midfield. He emphasized the importance of finding the optimal balance between McTominay’s physical presence and De Bruyne’s technical control.

This victory marks a strong start for Napoli as they aim for a third Scudetto in four years, with the midfield duo playing pivotal roles in their campaign.
