Manchester City have signed Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain on a five-year contract, the Premier League club confirmed on Tuesday, following Ederson’s departure to Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Financial terms were not officially disclosed, but British media reported that City paid £30 million ($40.5 million) for Donnarumma and agreed to sell Ederson for £12 million ($16.2 million).

City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana, said: “Gianluigi’s pedigree, quality and record speaks for itself, and we are all absolutely thrilled he has joined us here at City. He has accumulated a wealth of top-level experience and knows what is required to achieve success on a sustained level.”

Ederson’s permanent transfer to Fenerbahce on Tuesday morning cleared the way for Donnarumma’s arrival. The 32-year-old Brazilian had been City’s first-choice goalkeeper since joining from Benfica in 2017, keeping 168 clean sheets in 372 appearances.

Donnarumma, 26, joined PSG from AC Milan in 2021 and played a pivotal role in their first Champions League triumph earlier this year as part of a treble. He saved penalties against Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones in the last 16 and kept a clean sheet in the 5-0 final win over Inter Milan in May.

The following month, Donnarumma helped PSG reach the 2025 Club World Cup final, where they were defeated 3-0 by Chelsea. However, he fell out of favour at PSG after manager Luis Enrique left him out of the UEFA Super Cup squad following the arrival of goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. Donnarumma later announced his departure from PSG, saying he was “disappointed and disheartened” by the decision.

Donnarumma is also captain of the Italy national team and was named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2020. Meanwhile, English keeper James Trafford, signed earlier this summer, has started all three of City’s Premier League games this season.Faridah Abdulkadiri
