The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has approved the elevation of 57 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), following its 169th plenary session held on Thursday, 24 July 2025.
According to a press release issued on 24 July 2025 and signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Kabir Eniola Akanbi, Esq., the session was chaired by the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON. The elevation, the statement noted, was conferred “as a mark of professional excellence” on advocates who have demonstrated distinction in court advocacy or made significant academic contributions to the legal profession.
The list comprises 56 advocates and one academic, Professor Chima Josephat Ubanyionwu, who was approved under the academic category.
The LPPC also confirmed that it considered three petitions filed against certain applicants. However, the Committee stated in the release that, “upon thorough review, each petition was found to be lacking in merit and was accordingly dismissed.”
The Committee further directed that all successful candidates must attend and successfully complete the mandatory Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme. It warned against the publication or encouragement of congratulatory messages, advertisements or goodwill notices, in accordance with Paragraph 25(1) of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Guidelines and Rule 39(3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023.
“Any breach of these provisions may attract sanctions for violations of statutory or ethical rules as expressly stated,” the LPPC cautioned.
The swearing-in ceremony for the 2025 SAN conferment is scheduled to hold on Monday, 29 September 2025.
Some of the newly approved Senior Advocates of Nigeria include Theophilus Kolawole Esan, Fedude Zimughan, Ernest Chikwendu Ikeji, Victor Esiri Akpoguma, Leslie Akujuobi Njemanze, Akintunde Wilson Adewale, Preye Agedah, and Omamuzo Erebe.
