The Kogi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has indefinitely suspended Hon. Leke Abejide, the member representing Yagba East-West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s State Secretary, Adaji John, in Lokoja, the ADC accused the federal lawmaker of “gross insubordination” and “engaging in anti-party activities,” warning that he risks expulsion if he continues to undermine the party’s leadership.
“The Kogi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended one of our members serving in the National Assembly. The affected person is Honourable Leke Abejide, representing Yagba East-West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives,” the statement read.
John noted that Abejide’s suspension stemmed from a recent unauthorised meeting with some party members in Abuja, which, according to him, was organised without the knowledge or clearance of the ADC leadership in the state.
“For ease of reference to specify clearly, Hon. Abejide’s suspension is based on proven case of gross insubordination and an attempt to usurp the powers of the State chairman and the Secretary. The suspension is also due to the aspersion he cast on the leadership at a recent event in Abuja, the nation’s capital,” John stated.
The party alleged that the lawmaker had tried to influence local party leaders into supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a move that runs counter to ADC’s principles.
“According to the party, Hon. Abejide went beyond his limits when he attempted to lure the leadership of the party at the wards and Local Governments to a meeting with the aim of working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against the interest of our great party, ADC,” the statement said.
John further criticised the Abuja meeting as a violation of party rules: “We are aware of a recent meeting purportedly called by him inviting our leaders in the wards and Local Governments to Abuja, a clear violation of relevant portions of the party’s constitution which gives such powers to the chairman and secretary only.”
The ADC cautioned other members present at the meeting to reconsider their loyalty to the party, saying: “Shape up or ship out.”
“ADC as a party will not tolerate any act of indiscipline,” the party stressed.
John concluded by urging Abejide to desist from making disparaging remarks about party leaders and to immediately discontinue any form of association with the APC.
