The Emir of Gusau in Zamfara State, Dr Ibrahim Bello, has died at the age of 71. He passed away on Friday morning in Abuja following a prolonged illness.
The death of the monarch was confirmed in a statement by Sulaiman Bala Idris, spokesperson to Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, who described the loss as deeply personal.
“I received with deep sadness the news of the passing of our father, His Royal Highness, Dr Ibrahim Bello, the Emir of Gusau,” the statement read.
Governor Lawal extended his condolences to the Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, the late emir’s family, the Gusau emirate, and the people of Zamfara, describing the royal father as a pillar of support and a dedicated leader.
“His highness’s passing is a huge loss for the people of Zamfara state, as well as for the north and Nigeria as a whole,” he said.
Bello became the 15th Emir of Gusau on 16 March 2015 and led the emirate for a decade with “commitment, dedication and a strong sense of faith,” according to the governor.
Before ascending the throne, the late emir had a distinguished civil service career, rising to the position of permanent secretary in the old Sokoto and Zamfara states.
“I have lost a confidant and a father whose wisdom guided me and other state leaders,” Lawal said. “May the Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah.”
