Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed has made a series of pointed remarks about Vice President Kashim Shettima, stating that he should not have been allowed to “last this long” as Vice President.
Speaking in an interview on ARISE NEWS on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed, while responding to the insinuations that Shettima’s VP slot is not assured in 2027, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has tried by keeping him this long.
Though he refrained from going into specifics, Baba-Ahmed suggested that unspoken truths underpin the political rise and continued relevance of Shettima.
“I don’t blame Tinubu, because whoever knows what Shettima did and does will not even allow him to last this long. The airwaves cannot carry it. I’m telling you, the airwaves cannot carry it. And I know I’m speaking on TV. So Tinubu has tried keeping him this long. So, even the consideration that he be dropped, I think Tinubu has tried for keeping him this long.”
Baba-Ahmed’s comments formed part of a broader critique of the current administration, which he claimed came into power through manipulation and illegitimacy, describing Tinubu not as a thriving leader but as a product of a rigged system.
He described the 2023 election outcome as a product of manipulation and secrecy, stating that what Nigerians see as a stable presidency is a façade.
“You see a flourishing, powerful president. I see a rigged leader,” he added.
