The Benue State House of Assembly on Friday, at plenary presided over by Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, approved the immediate suspension of Hon. Alfred Aondoaver Emberga of Makurdi North Constituency, Hon. Shimawua Emmanuel Vandeikya 2 Constituency, Hon. Cyril Ikong of Oju 2 Constituency and Hon. Abu Umoru of Apa Constituency, for three months from legislative duties for conspiracy and attempting to cause chaos and impeach the speaker.

Following the motion moved by Hon. Saater Tiseer, the Majority Leader titled: ‘H.M. 17: Motion to suspend Hon. Alfred Aondoaver Emberga (Makurdi North State Constituency) and three others from legislative duties for attempting to cause chaos in the House’.

The mover of the motion further informed the House that on Wednesday 20th August, 2025 , the House in the spirit of unity passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the House and the governor of the state and expressed worry barely three days after the House adopted resolutions on the matter and Hon. Emberga and three others went behind to mobilise other members to cause chaos in the House which was inimical to the peaceful co-existence of the House.

He further said that the House condemned in the strongest terms the dishonourable actions of Hon. Alfred Aondoaver (Makurdi North Constituency), that the House suspend the following members from legislative duties for six months for indulging in dishonourable actions capable of causing aspersions and causing acrimony in the House.

Deliberating, Hon. Elias Audu of Gwer East Constituency and the Majority Chief Whip, Hon. Peter Bendigo Ipusu of Katsina -Ala West Constituency condemned the acts of the affected members in its entirety and supported the motion.

The Speaker who ruled three months suspension for the affected members further dissolved the House Standing Committee.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Benue State Government said the governor has no hand in any attempt to remove the Speaker.

The statement signed by the governor’s CPS, Tersoo Kula, said “the attention of Government House, Makurdi has been drawn to speculations bothering on alleged attempts to impeach the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh. It is therefore pertinent to state as follows:

“The Governor Hyacinth Alia, is not aware of, and has no involvement whatsoever in, any purported attempt to remove the speaker or in any activities currently taking place in the Benue State House of Assembly.

“The governor holds the legislature in the highest esteem and maintains unwavering respect for the rule of law as well as the principle of separation of powers among the three arms of government.

“He has consistently responded to communications and resolutions transmitted to him by the House.

“This commitment was demonstrated only a few days ago when he promptly upheld and implemented critical resolutions of the Assembly conveyed to his office.

“The Governor continues to enjoy a cordial and productive working relationship with the Dajoh-led Assembly, and remains committed to supporting it in the discharge of its legislative duties for the overall development of Benue State.”
