Bayern Munich have officially confirmed the signing of Colombia international Luis Díaz from Liverpool in a deal worth €75 million, including add-ons, according to sources cited by ESPN.
The 27-year-old winger becomes the Bundesliga champions’ third acquisition of the summer, following the arrivals of Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah and Hoffenheim midfielder Tom Bischof.
“I’m very happy, it means a lot to me to be part of FC Bayern, they’re one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Díaz said in a statement. “I want to help my new team with my way of playing football and my character. My goal is to win every possible title, and that’s what we’ll work for every day as a team.”
Díaz was absent from Liverpool’s recent friendly against AC Milan due to ongoing transfer speculation. He was granted permission to leave the club’s preseason tour of Asia on Sunday, paving the way for the move to be finalised.
Sources revealed the Colombian expressed a desire to leave Anfield as early as the summer of 2024, though Liverpool initially resisted the move while assessing their squad and the wider market. Two separate rounds of contract negotiations failed, with the club and player’s representatives unable to bridge a gap between wage expectations.
Liverpool reportedly turned down a €67.5m offer from Bayern earlier this month, but ultimately accepted an improved bid after the German giants persisted in their pursuit.
Díaz departs Liverpool after his most prolific season yet, scoring 17 goals in all competitions and playing a key role in the club’s Premier League title triumph under new manager Arne Slot.
Having joined Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022 for a fee rising to €49m, Díaz scored 41 goals in 148 appearances across all competitions.
His departure helps Liverpool balance their books following an aggressive summer of spending, with around £290 million reportedly shelled out on Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, and Hugo Ekitike.
The sale also raises Liverpool’s outgoing transfer revenue to approximately £190 million since sporting director Richard Hughes took charge last summer.
Attention now turns to potential replacements, with Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak said to be a top target. Sources claim the Swedish forward, currently nursing a thigh injury and omitted from Newcastle’s preseason tour of Asia, has informed the club of his interest in exploring a move away from St. James’ Park.
