Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland and one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most influential traditional rulers, has died at the age of 91.
The respected monarch passed away on Sunday, just hours after the announcement of the death of his close friend and former president, Muhammadu Buhari.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in April 1960 and remained a towering figure in Yoruba land and Nigeria at large for over six decades. His reign witnessed vast socio-political transformations in the country, during which he maintained a strong moral voice on national issues.
Known for his candour, statesmanship, and commitment to the development of Ijebuland, Oba Adetona was often consulted by political leaders and revered for his wisdom and forthrightness.
