Nigeria booked their place in the Women Africa Cup of Nations final after Alozie’s dramatic last-minute goal secured a thrilling 2-1 victory against South Africa in a fiercely contested semi-final match.
From the first whistle, both teams demonstrated determination and skill, seeking to gain an early advantage. Nigeria created the initial threats, with Okoronkwo and Plumptre testing South African goalkeeper Nnadozie’s reflexes. Despite several chances, the first half remained tightly contested until Nigeria earned a penalty in the 43rd minute when South Africa’s Mbane handled the ball inside the box. Ajibade calmly converted from the spot, putting Nigeria ahead just before halftime.
The second half saw South Africa intensify their attacks, desperate to equalise and keep their championship hopes alive. Their efforts were rewarded in the 56th minute when South Africa were awarded a penalty after a foul on Magaia by Ohale. Linda Motlhalo stepped up and confidently scored, levelling the match at 1-1.
As the match progressed, physicality and tension increased, with a serious injury to South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado momentarily halting play. Both teams fought hard but found it difficult to create clear-cut chances amid solid defensive efforts and vigilant goalkeeping.
In the dying moments of the game, Nigeria made tactical substitutions to maintain energy and composure. Then, at the 90+4 minute mark, Alozie seized an opportunity inside the box, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner after a scramble and catching the South African goalkeeper off guard.
The goal sparked jubilant celebrations as Nigeria secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory and advanced to the Women Africa Cup of Nations final, where they will compete for the continental crown. This victory showcased Nigeria’s resilience and determination, setting the stage for an exciting final showdown.
