african-nations-championship:-nigeria-fall-01-to-defending-champions-senegal-in-opening-clash

Nigeria’s Eagles suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat to title-holders Senegal in their opening Group D match of the 8th African Nations Championship on Tuesday in Zanzibar.

The lone goal came with just 15 minutes left on the clock, as Senegal capitalised on a moment of defensive lapse. A teasing build-up drew goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha off his line, allowing the Lions of Teranga to strike decisively with what was their only shot on target.

The game, played at the Amaan Stadium, was an intense and balanced contest. Both West African sides matched each other in pace and physicality, with long spells of midfield battles and resolute defending on both ends. Nigeria, however, edged possession and showed attacking intent throughout, though their final passes often fell short of unlocking Senegal’s tight defence.

Lawal Mustapha was alert in the first half, denying Senegal’s early threat from a cross in the 21st minute and a dangerous free-kick in the 33rd. At the back, Leonard Ngenge and captain Junior Nduka remained composed, while Tochukwu Michael and Olamilekan Adedayo put in tireless shifts in midfield.

Despite their efforts, Nigeria struggled to convert pressure into clear-cut chances. The reigning champions defended with determination, crowding out attacking spaces and frustrating Nigerian advances. In the dying moments, Senegal nearly doubled their lead through a sweeping team move, but Nigeria’s defenders were quick to intervene.

The result places Nigeria at the bottom of Group D with no points, behind Congo and Sudan who earlier played out a 1–1 draw.

The Eagles will look to bounce back when they face Sudan next Tuesday, again at the Amaan Stadium, in a match that could determine their chances of progressing from the group stage.
