France defeated Senegal 3-1 in a thrilling Group I opener, with Mbappe’s brace proving decisive in a tightly contested match where both sides showed strong intensity before the French took control late on.
Both teams produced an intense contested battle from the opening whistle. With both sides matching each other in intensity, physicality and attacking intent, which was all about Senegal at a point. Neither team were able to establish sustained control of the game as momentum swung back and forth throughout the first half, making it a competitive, entertaining and balanced one.
France broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, when Micheal Olise delivered a stellar pass to Kylian Mbappe, who dropped a brilliant finish, completely out of the hands of Eduardo Mendy.
Senegal thought they got an equalizer a minute later through Nicholas Jackson, but was immediately ruled offside.
France doubled their lead in the 82nd minute, when Barcola, who only just spent two minute on the field after being subbed on, recieved a long pass from Rabiot, drove the ball into the box, and delivered cleanly on target.
Senegal get a late goal compensation in the 95th minute, with Ibrahim Mbaye delivering a powerful shot to get them back in the game.
The Frenchmen further stretched the margin in the 96th minute, just after Senegal scored, with a screamer shot from Kylian Mbappe from outside the box, sealing their win.
The hard-fought victory moves France to the top of Group I, taking an important step towards qualification for the knockout stages of the tournament, while Senegal remains under early pressure following their defeat, with a little margin for error in their remaining matches.
