Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Sani, has insisted that his faction of the party will participate in the 2027 general elections, declaring that the law and facts remain on their side despite the lingering leadership dispute within the PDP.
Speaking in an interview on ARISE NEWS on Thursday, Sani said members of the faction should remain confident about contesting future elections under the PDP platform. “We are telling them with our full chest that the law is on our side, the facts is on our side, and we are going to contest election in 2027.”
Sani spoke while reacting to comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who had defended the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee as the legitimate leadership of the PDP.
According to Sani, the Supreme Court judgment on the PDP leadership dispute had already settled the matter. “The issue has already been settled. This is a matter that the highest court of the land has made a pronouncement,” he said.
“That pronouncement will now generate a certified true copy of the judgement, which will now table before INEC. And INEC will have no other fund than to comply with a judgement of the Supreme Court.”
He added, “So what we are just waiting for is for INEC to have their own certified true copy, and then we are good to go.”
Sani dismissed claims that the PDP remained in disarray over issues relating to bank accounts, party offices and legitimacy.
“The issue of bank account or no bank account, they are all diversionary. They are intended to create in the minds of Nigerians that there still exists a problem within the PDP,” he said.
“When in actual fact, there is no problem and only problem has been permanently solved, resolved by the apex court.”
He also maintained that his faction remained the legitimate leadership of the opposition party.
“We are telling you that by the law, by the law, and far from the case, we are the authentic PDP,” Sani stated.
The PDP chieftain also accused Wike of attempting to intimidate members of the faction through public comments about the party’s offices and bank accounts.
“What he has said is merely an intimidation tactics,” he said.
“He knows we have been holding meetings, he knows we have been holding meetings, we have held meetings. So he can’t do nothing.”
Sani further claimed that individuals had already begun purchasing forms ahead of future elections.
“I must tell you, a lot of people, somebody from Adebayor State has already bought form to become governor. We have been having so many people purchasing form,” he said.
“So, Nigerians are confident that we are on the right path.”
