Former Vice President Atiku has called on Nigerians to demand genuine change, warning that the country is facing deepening challenges across key sectors.
Speaking at the ADC 2026 National Elective Convention in Abuja, Atiku said the nation’s current situation reflects years of failed leadership and urged citizens, particularly members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to take responsibility for shaping a better future.
He said, “I appeal to Nigerians, especially members of the ADC, to ensure that this time around we are truly committed to changing the situation in the country.”
Reflecting on past political alliances, Atiku recounted how he was persuaded to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressing disappointment with the outcome.
“I remember when APC was being formed, the entire political leadership in this country from various parties stormed into my house only for us to end in this state of affairs: our economy gone, our sovereignty gone, our security gone, our education gone, our infrastructure zero, health care gone,” he said.
He stressed that the current generation of leaders must act in the interest of young Nigerians and future generations.
“We, the people of my own generation, are in this game because of you, young men and women, our children, and our grandchildren,” he said.
Atiku also pledged that an ADC-led government would take a firm stance against corruption and insecurity.
“Believe me, you cannot get away with corruption in the government of ADC. You cannot, You cannot compromise with criminals and terrorists to make life impossible in this country,” he stated.
He further criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing it of undermining democracy, and warned that Nigerians would resist any such actions.
“It is clear, it is obvious the evidence is there INEC is being used to scuttle democracy in this country,” he said.
According to him, Nigerians must remain committed to defending democratic values.
“We fought the military to bring democracy to this country, and we are going to fight them to bring true democracy to this country,” Atiku added.
He concluded by calling for collective support to rebuild the nation and ensure progress across all sectors.
“I hope we will have your support and cooperation to make sure we return to true democracy, to true development in all aspects of human endeavour,” he said.
