maxwell-opara:-peter-obikwankwaso-engagement-signals-move-toward-political-coalition

Maxwell Opara, a legal practitioner, has said that growing political interactions between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso are part of early strategic consultations that could shape opposition alliances and influence the 2027 presidential race.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News on Tuesday, Opara said it is difficult to separate social or ceremonial visits from political strategy in the current political climate, noting that most high-level interactions are politically significant.

He explained that engagements such as visits, meetings, and public appearances often form part of broader political calculations, especially in a period where actors are positioning themselves for future elections. According to him, “everything is all about politics, because it’s a political season.”

Opara said coalition-building remains essential in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system, stressing that a united opposition can serve as a strong counterbalance to the ruling party and improve governance outcomes.

He emphasized that successful political alliances require compromise among key actors, noting that leadership ambitions must sometimes be set aside for broader goals. He stated that “who is ready to sacrifice his ambition for another person to move” will determine the success of any coalition.

Referencing past political developments, Opara pointed out that strategic sacrifices have historically played a role in shaping successful political movements and outcomes in Nigeria.

He further argued that for any coalition to be effective, key stakeholders must agree on roles and leadership structures, as disagreements over ambition often weaken such arrangements.

Opara also expressed concern that Nigeria currently lacks a truly unified opposition, describing this as a major weakness in the political system.

According to him, a strong and coordinated opposition would force the ruling party to remain accountable, adding that political competition is essential for democratic growth.

He linked voter participation to the credibility of political actors, noting that citizens are more likely to engage in elections when they trust the candidates presented to them.

Opara concluded that the success of any potential coalition between political actors such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso would depend on their willingness to cooperate and present a clear, united front to the electorate.
