President Bola Tinubu has extended condolences to the family of Henry Onyemanze Nwosu, the former Super Eagles midfielder who died on Saturday at the age of 62.
Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, joined the Nigerian football community in mourning the late football legend.
The President described Nwosu as an exceptionally skilled player whose artistry on the football field remains memorable.
He recalled Nwosu’s outstanding performance as a 17-year-old member of the then Green Eagles squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Tinubu also acknowledged Nwosu’s more than a decade of service to Nigeria’s national team and his contributions to subsequent AFCON tournaments in 1982, 1984 and 1988.
According to the President, the late playmaker brought pride and joy to the country through his performances and inspired many Nigerians to pursue excellence in sports.
He also recognised Nwosu’s contributions to sports development in Nigeria after his playing career.
Tinubu said the former midfielder would always be remembered for his dedication and the impact he made on Nigerian football.
The President prayed for the repose of Nwosu’s soul and asked God to grant comfort to his family and loved ones during the period of mourning.
