The Labour Party (LP) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to infiltrate its ranks and hijack its structures ahead of the 2027 general election.
Interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, said on Saturday that intelligence reaching the party revealed plans by APC to plant moles in LP’s ward, local government, state, zonal, and national congresses.
“We have been made aware of the heinous plot by the ruling APC to infiltrate our ranks at all levels,” Akeni said. “If they fail, they intend to force their way to our table, just as they previously used our former chairman, Julius Abure, to distract us.”
He further accused APC of manipulating the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing recent by-elections and flaws in the ongoing voter registration exercise. “We cannot afford a return to the era when names like Mike Tyson and Michael Jackson appeared on our register,” he warned.
In a separate statement, Akeni lambasted President Bola Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips amidst worsening insecurity and economic hardship. Tinubu left Nigeria on Thursday for a 10-day working vacation in France and the United Kingdom.
Akeni claimed 135 million Nigerians had fallen into poverty within Tinubu’s first 18 months in office, blaming inflation, naira depreciation, and insecurity. “President Tinubu has virtually lived outside Nigeria for nearly 160 days in two years,” he said, comparing APC presidents to “nomadic leaders” who squander taxpayers’ money on medical and social tourism.
The Labour Party maintained that it would chart a different course if voted into power in 2027, pledging to prioritise healthcare reform and democratic transparency.
