The Kano State House of Assembly has slammed a three-month suspension on the chairman of Rano Local Government Council, Muhammad Nazir Yau, over allegations of financial recklessness and inflation of fertilizer prices.

The Speaker, Jibril Isma’il Falgore, presided over the plenary session after receiving an investigative report from the House Committee on Public Petition, chaired by Majority Leader Lawan Dala.

The lawmakers reached the decision after receiving an interim report from the House Committee on Public Petition, chaired by Majority Leader Hussaini Lawan Cediyar Yangurasa.

The report accused Yau of deliberately stirring political tension in the council, favouring allies in the distribution of government resources, selling fertiliser at ₦22,000 instead of the ₦20,000 approved price, and sidelining councillors in the process.

Yau, was also accused of mismanaging revenues from markets and cattle levies, illegally allocating market stalls, disrespecting party elders, and diverting council funds. However, the Chairman, denied all the allegations but, admitted to raising the fertilizer price by ₦2,000 despite the state government directing it be sold at ₦20,000.

According investigation nine councillors out of ten filed a petition accusing the Chairman of abuse of office, and inflating fertilizer prices against state directives.

The lawmakers, Cited Section 55 of the Kano State Local Government Law 2006, the Assembly ordered him to step aside to allow for a full investigation and directed the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to install the vice chairman as acting chairman.
