The Kaduna State Police Command has issued a strong warning to supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, advising them to suspend plans for a birthday rally in his honour.
In a statement released on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, Mansir Hassan, said intelligence reports suggest that some criminal elements are plotting to infiltrate the proposed gathering, with the intent to disrupt public peace and cause chaos.
While reaffirming the public’s constitutional rights to freedom of association and political expression, Hassan noted that the suspension of political rallies and gatherings across the state remains in effect. This directive, he said, will be in place until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially permits the commencement of political activities.
“The Command respects the right of individuals to associate and celebrate their political leaders,” the statement read. “However, it is important to emphasise that all forms of political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended across the state until the official commencement date of political activities, as stipulated by INEC.”
Hassan further noted that the proposed rally could coincide with scheduled political party primaries, potentially leading to tension, disruptions, or even violent clashes.
“In view of these developments, the Command strongly advises the organisers of the planned Peter Obi rally to suspend any gathering or procession,” he added. “If they wish to hold any form of event in honour of their principal, it is advised that such activities be suspended to ensure public safety and prevent potential hijack by miscreants.”
The warning comes amid heightened political sensitivity and a growing emphasis on maintaining order and stability in the lead-up to Nigeria’s next electoral cycle.
