rivers-youth-group-commends-wike-and-fubara-for-embracing-peace,-plans-reconciliation-summit

The Rivers State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has applauded Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for embracing peace amid the state’s lingering political crisis.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its chairman, Comrade Gift Dandison Jumbo, the NYCN commended both leaders for demonstrating restraint and maturity in recent political disputes, describing their actions as a necessary step toward stability.

“We commend these two state actors for giving peace a chance. Just as it’s said, when two brothers fight, strangers inherit their wealth. Let us maintain the peace with dialogue, humility, honesty, and the collective will to heal the land,” the Council stated.

Reaffirming its neutrality, the NYCN described itself as an independent and patriotic body committed to peace, unity, and the progress of Rivers State. It also warned against the use of youths as instruments of political manipulation and violence.

“In the spirit of patriotism and responsibility, the Youth Leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Rivers State Chapter, stands as an independent and neutral voice committed to peace, unity, and the progress of our dear state,” the statement read.

While expressing “deep concern” over the impact of political tensions on social and economic cohesion, the NYCN called on all stakeholders to prioritise the interests of the people above political affiliations.

Describing itself as the “apex and most vibrant youth platform in the state,” the Council emphasized its role as a bridge-builder and reiterated its commitment to justice, dialogue, and reconciliation.

In a proactive move, the Council announced plans to host a youth-led peace and reconciliation summit, bringing together young leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society groups to develop homegrown solutions for sustained peace.

“History will judge us not by the noise of division but by the courage we showed to build bridges across troubled waters,” the statement concluded.
