Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has confirmed the arrest of 28 suspects in connection with the recent mass killings in Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
Over 200 people, including farmers and internally displaced persons (IDPs), were reportedly killed during the June 13 attacks, which sparked national outrage and drew sharp criticism from President Bola Tinubu, who lamented the police’s initial failure to apprehend the perpetrators.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun said efforts are ongoing to arrest more individuals linked to the massacre. He emphasised that the police remain in firm control of the situation and are intensifying operations to remove illegal light and small arms from the hands of unauthorised holders.
The IGP also disclosed that 22 other suspects were arrested in Jos, Plateau State, in connection with the killing of nine wedding travellers in Quanpan. All suspects, he said, will soon be charged in court.
In addition, Egbetokun revealed that border patrols have been strengthened to stem the influx of irregular migrants into the country, as part of broader efforts to boost national security.
