The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) will hold its Biennial National Convention in Enugu from 26 to 29 June 2025, bringing together more than 400 editors to deliberate on national cohesion and the media’s role in building a secure Nigeria.
The convention, themed “Building a Secure and Cohesive Nigeria: The Role of Dialogue, Inclusion and the Media”, will feature participation from notable media figures including Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, Publisher of Vanguard; Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, former Presidential Spokesman; Prince Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman/Editor-in-Chief of THISDAY/Arise News Channel, and Dr. John Momoh, Chairman of Channels Television.
In a statement jointly signed by its President, Mr Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Dr Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the NGE said the event would be declared open by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris Malagi.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State will serve as Chief Host, while Dr Momoh will chair the convention. Prince Amuka-Pemu, Chief Osoba, and Chief Ugochukwu are billed to serve as Fathers of the Day.
A major highlight of the event will be the keynote address to be delivered by the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, titled “Nation’s Security Future: Harnessing Diversity for Peace/Stability and the Media’s Role.” The National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, is also expected to attend as Special Guest.
According to the Guild, the theme reflects the importance of leveraging national diversity to foster peace and inclusion, while underlining the media’s responsibility in promoting tolerance and dialogue.
The Guild noted that inclusive governance and accurate reporting can contribute to national stability. It also highlighted the media’s responsibility in addressing hate speech, misinformation, and stereotypes through constructive storytelling and public engagement.
The three-day convention will also include the election of new executives who will steer the affairs of the Guild for the next two years.
