2027:-nigerians-must-vote-with-conscience,-common-good,-says-catholic-secretariat

The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) has called on Nigerians to make political and civic choices guided by conscience, truth and the common good, rather than ethnic loyalty, religious bias, money or divisive rhetoric, as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
In its New Year message, the CSN also urged public servants and professionals to reject bribery and abuse of office in 2026, while calling on traders, artisans, business owners and workers to act with integrity and honesty in their daily conduct.

The Secretary-General of the CSN, Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, said national renewal begins with personal moral responsibility, stressing that Nigeria’s transformation depends not only on leadership but on the daily choices of citizens.

“Nigeria can be better, and authentic love for our country demands more than pointing out its failures; it calls for personal fidelity to what is right,” Banjo said. “Nations are renewed when consciences are renewed.”

He noted that renewal must extend beyond the corridors of power and take root in everyday life, urging Nigerians to treat public infrastructure such as roads, schools, hospitals and utilities with a sense of stewardship rather than neglect or vandalism.

According to him, the 2027 elections present a critical moment of civic responsibility, where voters must be guided by conscience and the common good, instead of ethnic sentiment, religious considerations or financial inducements.

Banjo said public servants and professionals must reject corruption, while traders and business owners should conduct their affairs honestly, reminding workers that their labour is ultimately offered not only to employers but to God.

He further stressed the role of families and schools in shaping national character, describing them as the foundation for forming consciences that will sustain the nation’s future.

The CSN also challenged young Nigerians to embrace discipline, education, skills acquisition and character development, warning against drugs, crime and shortcuts that destroy potential and undermine national progress.

Despite economic hardship, insecurity and social tension experienced in the past year, Banjo said the New Year offers renewed hope, adding that hope becomes credible only when translated into responsible action.
